Dollar Index positioning is historically stretched long, creating USD downside risk if those positions unwind.
Dollar Index positioning is a separate confirmation layer. It is not the same as aggregate USD positioning across all currency futures and does not affect the ranking below.

Institutional squeeze risk - AM-driven short covering. Fewer fresh sellers remain on the sidelines, so GBP is likely more sensitive to good news than bad news. The upside reaction is usually gradual, but a major CB surprise can accelerate it. Largest-trader concentration: top 8 net long 62.4% of OI, top 4 47.3%, max historical percentile 78.8. Opposite the active AM + LevFund signal, this is treated as counterparty structure only and is not scored. Watch BoE Nov 5. AM SHORT COVERING PRESSURE - AM remains net short while GBP strengthened over the latest CFTC week. Further short covering could reinforce upside. GBP/USD move over the CFTC week: +0.9%.

Every metric, score and ranking is calculated from the standard-size futures contracts in the CFTC dataset. Micro contracts are not included in the calculations. Their links are provided for contract reference only.
The positioning risk amplitude is built on the combined net position of Asset Managers and Leveraged Funds pooled together - not evaluated separately. For each week in history:
Spec net = (AM longs - AM shorts) + (LevFund longs - LevFund shorts)
Expressing this as a percentage of total open interest gives the combined spec net%OI, shown on each currency card. The signed percentile then ranks the current combined net%OI against its own history over 1y / 3y / 5y windows.
The percentile uses net%OI rather than raw contract counts. A raw net line can print a visual record while remaining short of an extreme after normalization for a larger open-interest base.
Pooling the two categories avoids artificial double-scoring: if AM is long and LevFund is short in equal size, their positions cancel and no signal fires - which is correct.
Cell shading (per-category detail): >=90 extreme long >=80 near long <=10 extreme short <=20 near short OI >=80th %ile
Setup quality /10 - How actionable is the risk?
Combines the reaction pattern (40%), confirmation in the other CFTC dataset (25%), four-week OI trend (10%), fresh one-week speculative flow (10%) and central-bank catalyst proximity (15%).
Synchronized exposure ranks above aligned exposure, followed by fast-money and institutional-only exposure.
Risk amplitude remains the primary crowding input. When two crowding signals are within one point, setup quality breaks the near-tie. This allows a synchronized, cross-dataset-confirmed signal to rank above a slightly larger but slower institutional imbalance.
How could the market react? - four patterns used in the overview and Reading column:
A short-squeeze signal implies upside reaction risk. A long-liquidation signal implies downside reaction risk. If no pattern is shown, neither AM nor LevFund is individually extreme enough to identify a clear reaction driver.
Risk amplitude /10 - How much is at stake?
Measures how extreme the combined speculative position (AM + LevFund pooled) is versus its own history across 1y / 3y / 5y windows.
The score also increases when open interest is historically high. If OI has risen by at least 5% over four weeks, an OI-building multiplier is applied.
A high risk-amplitude score means a large volume of contracts may need to unwind if a catalyst strikes.
A perfect 10/10 requires a combined 5y signed percentile within 0.5% of the historical edge, with both Asset Managers and Leveraged Funds individually extreme on the 5y window in the same direction.
Other saturated signals are capped at 9.8/10.
Positioning status is separate from the score. Biased means the signal is concentrated in fewer historical windows. Crowded means the extreme is confirmed across more windows. A biased market can still rank higher when its current net exposure and OI factors are larger.
Are existing positions moving against the market?
This signal is independent from historical crowding. It compares the weekly change in Asset Manager and Leveraged Fund positions with the currency move over the same CFTC interval, from the previous report Tuesday close to the current report Tuesday close.
For JPY, CHF and CAD, USD-base pairs are inverted so the move is always expressed from the CFTC currency's perspective. This is a pressure warning, not proof of forced liquidation, because the CFTC does not disclose entry prices or hedging motives.
HIGH OI means OI is at or above its 80th percentile in at least two historical windows. OI BUILDING means OI rose by at least 5% over four weeks and directly boosts the risk-amplitude score.
FRESH FLOW means combined AM + LevFund positioning moved by at least 5% of current OI further into the signal direction over the latest week. Dealer flow is shown as counterparty context but is not scored separately.
CONCENTRATED LONGS / CONCENTRATED SHORTS use the CFTC largest-trader concentration fields. They show whether a large share of open interest sits in fewer large hands. This is a fragility confirmation layer, not a standalone directional score, because the CFTC does not identify which trader group holds those largest positions. When the largest-trader side is opposite the AM + LevFund signal, it is treated as counterparty context only and is not scored.
Weekly workflow: risk amplitude or position pressure >= 7/10 -> enters watchlist. Use setup quality to prioritize near-ties, then require price confirmation before treating positioning risk as a trade.
